Personal Statement
Dr. Jane Hilton is an Assistant Professor of Speech Language Pathology and the Director of Clinical Services in the UVA Speech-Language-Hearing Center in a General Faculty line. Her research examines the efficacy and effectiveness of early intervention programs for young children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Dr. Hilton’s primary development project is establishing a multidisciplinary treatment center for autistic children and their families in conjunction with the Kluge Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Hilton has served as President of the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia and has been an active participant in the annual convention Planning Committee. She has also formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Communication Disorders Foundation of Virginia.
Research Interests
Dr. Hilton specializes in addressing the communication skills of children diagnosed an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her research interests include comparing the effectiveness of intervention approaches used to improve the communication skills of children on the spectrum. Each summer, she runs the Speech-Language Intensive Summer Program (SPLISH) at the University of Virginia Speech-Language-Hearing Center providing concentrated speech-language services to children with autism between the ages of 2 and 7 years. Other areas of interest include providing Early Intervention services to the birth to three population, speech and language development, and articulation and phonological disorders in young children.
