Character Guide – The Addams Family

GOMEZ ADDAMS: Charismatic and of obviously Spanish descent, he takes great pride in his family and revels in all it means to be an “Addams.” A self made man, he is besotted by his wife, Morticia, whom he adores. He is immaculately dressed, with great style, and ‘savoir faire’.

MORTICIA ADDAMS: Alluring, statuesque, oozes sensuality with a good sense of comic timing. Powerful yet enigmatic, she is the real head of the family.

UNCLE FESTER: The androgynous Uncle who serves as the musical’s narrator. He is larger than life, an energetic, joyous, child-like presence.

WEDNESDAY ADDAMS: Wednesday is severe, with a deadpan wit and loves all things macabre. She has a morbid interest in inflicting harm on her brother. She is also the typically rebellious 18-year old daughter. She is determined to choose her own boyfriend yet, ironically, seeks the approval of her family when she falls in love with the “normal” Lucas.

GRANDMA: She is a feisty 102-year- old woman. Fun and quirky, but don’t mess with Grandma. Comedic actress with strong character vocals. This disrespectful old hag is the mother of Gomez. Her hair is white, frizzy and uncombed… she has a light beard and a large mole. She is foolishly good-natured and is easily fooled.

PUGSLEY ADDAMS: A precocious, at times obnoxious, young boy who loves being tortured by his sister. He is energetic and a dedicated troublemaker. He too puts family first and wants to ensure that he won’t lose his sister to her new boyfriend.

LURCH: The Addams Family Butler is a very tall, powerful, looming presence in the household. He is dedicated to the family and knows everything that is going on. He communicates in moans and groans without becoming a cartoon version of himself. His movements are slow and studied.

MAL BEINEKE: Stuffy father of Lucas. Over the years he has become exasperated with his wife Alice, who speaks in rhymes. At one time he was a follower of The Grateful Dead but has now lost that youthful, fun loving side of himself. He is always looking out for his family.

ALICE BEINEKE: Mother of Lucas and typical bored, middle class housewife. She should be able to show the contrast between her arrival at the house and after she drinks the potion, ‘Acrimonium’, causing her to let go of her inhibitions and reveal her true feelings.

LUCAS BEINEKE: Preppy, smart young boyfriend of Wednesday who although wants to be wild/rebel finds it difficult to escape his conventional upbringing. He falls in love at first sight with Wednesday and plans to marry her. He experiences the youthful pain and drama of young love and struggles with the differences between his ‘normal’ family and the wonderfully weird Addams family.
